    In musical movies, the vocals are typically recorded in a studio before the musical scenes are shot. So the actors are lip-syncing in the performances you see on screen.

    I’ve heard that the upcoming Les Mis movie was done differently, with 

    the vocals recorded on-set. The actors are singing along to a keyboardist and then the orchestra is mixed in later. If this trailer is any indication, the difference really shows up on screen!
