  • Hipster and Living Dead Premieres

A couple of weekends ago both Night of the Living Dead! and Kevin Frei’s Post-Modern Hipster Musical (You’ve Probably Never Heard of It) had their premiere performances, and I was lucky enough to be able to attend both! My parents and I made it into a road trip, first heading out toward LA to see Bellflower High School’s Living Dead, and then driving up the 5 (through mind-blowingly gorgeous Scotland-like green hills) to Oakley for Freedom High School’s Hipster Musical.

Both productions were amazing! Great singers, great actors, wonderful sets, lights, costumes, choreography, and staging across the board. I couldn’t have been more impressed or felt more honored to see so many talented people bring these shows to life for the first time. I was also very happy to see that the shows worked well, the audiences loved them, and most importantly the students loved them.

After both performances I got to hang around and chat with the students. I could have done that for hours. After getting back to the hotel room with my parents the first night, I said to them: “I could really get addicted to this.” I don’t often get to go to the productions of my musicals, but I would go to every single one if I could.

Big, big thanks to Eleanor Packwood at Bellflower HS and Michael Kleiman at Freedom HS for doing such a wonderful job with these shows and inviting me and my parents out to share in the fun. We had the time of our lives.
