  • New Musical in Spring 2016

    Posted by gmadmin   |   March 17, 2015

Oki-Doki! is a stage musical inspired by Japanese Role-Playing Games of the Super Nintendo-era. Its hero is a high school student bent on winning the Battle of the Bands when robots from the future steal his guitar. He pursues them back in time to the 16th Century where he discovers a plot by a powerful alien named Po to take over the world by entrancing humanity with his mysterious game show, Oki-Doki. While on his journey, our hero befriends the robots, a girl, a witch, a beast-man, and a ferret, who join him on his quest to save the world!

Oki-Doki! is scheduled to premiere at Phoenix Theater’s summer workshop, and it will be available to schools and theaters around the country by 2016!

  • Google Hangout with Albion High School

    Posted by gmadmin   |   October 8, 2014

Been talking to Albion High School’s radtacular drama teacher, Gary Simboli, about having a chat with the students over Google Hangouts as they prepare to put on Night of the Living Dead in a few weeks. Leah might join too. I just wish I could make it out to Albion to see their production!

Meanwhile Oki-Doki! is coming along beautifully. My mentor, Craig Bohmler, hosted a little readthrough at his house with some of the most amazing actors in Phoenix, and it went better than I could have hoped. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the script, and I was able to take their feedback and make changes that made it dramatically better.
My instinct is to dive right into the demo to get this thing ready for next year, but Craig has convinced me to go a little slower and work on the material some more before nailing it down. Patience is not my strong suit!

  • Oki-Doki Readthrough Next Week!

    Posted by gmadmin   |   September 8, 2014

My mentor Craig Bohmler has arranged a readthrough of our latest musical, Oki-Doki!, on the 15th with some incredible actors. Super stoked for that.

I’m dying to share the first demo track from that show, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise for the actors. 🙂

  • Electronic Dance Musical

    Posted by gmadmin   |   July 20, 2014

The last few songs I’ve been hooked on have been poppy EDM jams by Zedd, and it’s got me thinking… what about an EDM musical?

It would be performed in a warehouse. We would supply the tracks and a DJ would spin them live. Could be pretty gnarly.

One challenge would be integrating live vocals into a style that is so dependent on the mix. I’d just have to keep that in mind while writing. What would be a good story for this? Ooh, maybe I could resurrect Havisham? I had wanted to tell a steampunk version of the backstory of Miss Havisham from Great Expectations. Maybe this is the style I was looking for.

I haven’t really written in the EDM genre before, but a lot of the jams in my head are in that style. Here’s the closest I’ve got from our existing catalog (it’s parodying Britney Spears-type Swedish pop):

  • Musical Performance Royalties

    Posted by gmadmin   |   July 12, 2014

Every time I send a teacher or director a quote for the performance loyalty, I’m half-tempted to just say: “what sounds fair to you?”

The truth is we want people to perform our work. We want teenagers to do exciting theater, and we want to be a part of those memories that will last a lifetime. The money is secondary.

All theaters struggle in this world, but some struggle more than others. Many theaters simply cannot afford to pay the royalty fees for some of the bigger name musicals from the major licensors. That doesn’t mean MTI and Sam French are greedy companies; after all, they have all sorts of contracts with a zillion stakeholders in all of their shows, and everybody has to get paid.

But with Go Musicals, it’s just us. We can charge whatever makes both of us happy. So if you ever request a price quote from us and get sticker shock at the price, tell us and we’ll work with you. Just let us know what sounds fair to you.

The right encouragement can give you the energy to keep working on your craft. This nice comment regarding Night of the Living Dead! from Brandon in Arkansas was exactly the boost I needed:

Two thing: (these are just nice comments)

1.) Kerry is my favorite person! Ever!2.) the opening number…. Future performance number haha3.) any musical that has a Lady GaGa appearance is fantastic!!!!

Love the script, love the music!Thank you for allowing me to read this 🙂

Speaking of NOTLD, here’s some new art (still not quite what I’m looking for, but getting closer):

Things are moving so fast here. The new Final Vinyl is ready to rock. Hipster has a new song. The Phantom Empire backing tracks are done and Leah and I are recording vocals. Night of the Living Dead is getting new artwork. I won’t even mention what’s in the works for It’s a Wonderful Life. And most importantly, the feedback we’re getting from teachers and students has gone from great to amazing. I’m feeling really good about Go Musicals this season. All the hard work over the past couple of years is paying off. Let’s hope we get lots of productions lined up. 🙂 Super excited for my lesson with the great Craig Bohmler this weekend. But he’s not going to want to see what I’ve finished; he’s going to want to see what I’m working on. So over the next few days I’d better get cranking on the next script… 😉
